Working for Broomfield

Economic Vitality

While we look forward to an exciting Town Square, we have to remember that times were very hard during the pandemic and we are still recovering. “Pivot, not Panic” was my motto, and we supported our economic vitality while protecting lives. It was a time when we needed steady leadership during one of our most trying times in Broomfield and across the globe.

I supported increased vaccine accessibility, particularly for our essential workers, and supported Covid testing expansion.  I used my Biology degree to provide feedback to our state 5-star program to safely reopen businesses, with guidance that supported our businesses and protected our residents’ health. I worked with small businesses during the pandemic, keeping doors open safely and supporting our workforce, all while being present for my own kids as they learned from home. Additionally, I have supported tax relief for those on fixed incomes, residents with disabilities, and I am continually listening to residents to provide better tax relief programs.

I voted consistently to keep Broomfield within budget, while securing future-forward sustainable water resources and security for Broomfield’s needs for residents, businesses, and fire-fighting efforts. Additionally, I protected our right to keep local land use authority so we can have smart growth that supports our fiscal future. The only debt we have taken on as a city and county was the Windy Gap Project that will secure our future water resources, a decision supported by past city council members as well.  Highlights that support our Fiscal Sustainability include:

  • Recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Award
  • Strategically Balanced Budget: Exceeding required reserve levels of 10%, 2023 16.67%, on track to achieve 18% target in 2024, and 20% by 2025.
  • Shifting Capital Improvement Projects towards “Taking Care of What We Have”, while maintaining safety and integrity in service levels.

I am proud to serve on our Chamber of Commerce board serving our local Broomfield area businesses. I will always work to maintain our economic vitality by supporting smart commercial development in Broomfield and continue to deliver the high level of service we are known for.

Housing Choice for All

Our seniors deserve to remain in their homes or have the choice to downsize. Our teachers, firefighters, and workforce deserve the choice to live where they work and be close to their kids at school. Our immigrants and youth deserve the choice to have income-aligned rent and work their way towards homeownership.

I have supported, and will continue to support, policies that foster a range of housing choices for all generations, from single-family homes to townhouses, duplexes, and apartments. As many know, increased choice supports business growth (increased consumer demand and workforce capacity) and a sense of community.

We will continue to make our building processes faster and more affordable and enable incentives that encourage development while avoiding displacement and climate impacts. I have a proven track record of increasing affordability to live and work in Broomfield by supporting a new Housing Alliance that creates income-aligned housing stock especially for our hard-working teachers, immigrants, single moms, those with intellectual or developmental disabilities, and first responders.

I am proud to serve on our local CSBG Tripartite board that supports seniors that have faced increased rent to keep them housed, and prevents homelessness in areas where people could be facing eviction due to job loss or other temporary situations where residents need help. I also serve on our Metro Area County Commissioners board which has worked to combat homelessness regionally.

Public Safety & Mental Health

Broomfield has the second lowest crime rate in the state per capita, but we can always do more. And, being a part of a war-veteran family, with a family of our own in schools, I know safety and mental health is paramount.

Within a few months in office, I led our council to a unanimous vote for a local ordinance preventing Sexually Violent Predators living within 1,000 feet from parks, schools, daycares/preschools, libraries, public pools, and retail shopping malls. With increased car theft across the state, and hard-working families needing transportation to get their kids to school and themselves to work, I supported state laws that made car theft a felony.

As a gun owner for gun safety, I continued to support local and state common sense firearm safety laws such as waiting periods, increased strengthening of our red flag laws, and protected conceal carry.

I am proud to have served in our Adams 12 Leadership Academy where we learned about school safety, mental health resources, and more. I have consistently supported our local Broomfield Police Department needs, and regularly give encouragement to those serving our residents as first responders. Our family has also volunteered with Project Sanctuary which serves war veterans and their families so they can reconnect and elevate mental health and the safety of those who are at high-risk for suicide.

A Bright Future

With our democracy and human rights under attack at all levels of government, and with climate change being a constant driving force behind our decisions, I will continue to fight for the future of our children.

I will defend voting rights, champion policies that promote transparency, and ensure local reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights. For our future, I voted consistently to lower carbon emissions and support sustainability efforts, and helped change state laws that supported local rights to deny oil and gas permits.

I stand firmly alongside our residents to protect human rights in marriage equality and protected classes, and will continue to promote policies that incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion.

I am the Executive Director of the Broomfield Resettlement Task Force, resettling refugees in Broomfield who have lost everything in their home countries back in Afghanistan and Ukraine.  Additionally, I was appointed by the NACO President to serve on the Immigration Task Force where we discuss federal immigration laws and how they affect our counties and immigrant community. I have proudly marched for our diverse communities that enrich Broomfield and supported CCOB policies that incorporate DEI efforts.
